Preparing a Strong Membership Application
A membership application is easier to complete, and quicker to process, when you gather everything before you start filling in the form. Most professional bodies in logistics and transport assess applicants on a mix of education, work experience and current responsibilities, so it pays to have clear evidence of each to hand.
Documents worth gathering first
- Identification: a valid national ID or passport, with your name spelled exactly as it appears on your certificates.
- Academic and professional certificates: copies of degrees, diplomas or earlier logistics, procurement or transport qualifications.
- A current CV: list your roles, employers and dates, and say what you actually managed. That might be warehouse operations, fleet scheduling, freight forwarding, customs clearance or inventory planning.
- Employer details: your organisation's name and address, and the name of a referee who can confirm your role, if the form asks for one.
- A recent passport-sized photograph, if requested.
Choosing the right membership grade
Professional institutes usually offer several grades, from student and affiliate levels up to full membership and fellowship. Your grade generally reflects your qualifications and years of relevant experience. If you are unsure which one fits, describe your experience honestly and in detail. It is better to be placed at the right level than to have an application returned for clarification. Our membership overview explains the general differences between grades.
Common mistakes to avoid
Incomplete sections, unsigned declarations and missing attachments cause most delays. Before you submit, read the form once more from start to finish. Check that your dates of employment don't overlap or leave gaps without explanation. Keep a copy of everything you send. Fees and payment methods can change, so confirm the current amounts with the institute directly rather than relying on older copies of the form.
After you apply
Membership is most valuable when you use it. Look at the training programmes on offer to build towards higher grades. Attend sector events in Accra to meet peers in shipping, haulage and supply-chain management. Many professionals find that regular continuing development, and contacts made at these gatherings, shape their careers as much as the qualification itself.
