Getting the Most from a Logistics Mentorship
A mentorship works best when both people know what they want from it. Before you submit the registration form, take a few minutes to think about where you are in your career and where you would like to be in two or three years. Someone moving from warehouse operations into procurement will need different conversations from a graduate deciding between freight forwarding, fleet management or port logistics. Writing down two or three specific goals makes it far easier to match you with a mentor whose experience is genuinely relevant.
Preparing for your first conversations
Mentors in logistics are usually busy practitioners balancing shipments, suppliers and teams, so prepared mentees make the most of limited time. Useful preparation includes:
- A short career summary covering your current role, past experience and any qualifications you hold or are studying for.
- Concrete questions, such as how to handle customs documentation delays, how to build a case for new inventory software, or which professional qualifications suit your path.
- A real problem from work you are happy to discuss, with confidential details removed.
Agreeing how you will work together
Early on, agree how often you will meet, whether sessions will be in person in Accra, by phone or online, and how long the arrangement should run before you review it. Many pairs find a monthly meeting with brief check-ins in between keeps momentum without becoming a burden. Take notes after each session and act on at least one point before the next, as following through is what turns advice into progress.
Building on the relationship
Mentorship sits well alongside structured learning. Combining your mentor's practical insight with formal study through our training programmes helps you connect day-to-day decisions with wider supply-chain principles. Attending sector events is also a good way to extend the network your mentor introduces you to. If you have questions before applying, please get in touch through our contact page.
